Shortly before midnight, tens of thousands of members of the United Auto Workers went on strike at General Motors. Facilities in nine states have shut down after contract talks broke down. Its the unions First National strike in more than a decade. Negotiations are supposed to start up again later on this morning. And Laura Podesta is here in new york. Do we know how far apart the two sides are right now . Repter ell,ccording to the unions Vice President , they are very far apart on a deal for a new fouryear contract. Thats why the decision to strike was made. Its not an easy decision either because during this time gm workers will make a strike wage of just 250 a week. In the community are sharing of her legacy at city hall today, the bronze bust of the former mayor and late senator feinstein , adorned with flowers and a bouquet of white orchids, sat just outside the Mayors Office early this morning. Mayor london breed recalled the first female mayor of San Francisco as a mentor, a proud democratic leader. And like feinstein, was also propelled into the Mayors Office after tragedy. One of the first calls i got was from senator Dianne Feinstein. And we had a very long discussion about just just what she went through , how she made decisions, how difficult it was, and she provided that support and that mentorship to make sure that i was prepared to step up at a difficult time for our city. Fondly remembered by those who came to share their remembrances and pay their respects at the south gallery in city hall.
