Shortly before midnight, tens of thousands of members of the United Auto Workers went on strike at General Motors. Facilities in nine states have shut down after contract talks broke down. Its the unions First National strike in more than a decade. Negotiations are supposed to start up again later on this morning. And Laura Podesta is here in new york. Do we know how far apart the two sides are right now . Repter ell,ccording to the unions Vice President , they are very far apart on a deal for a new fouryear contract. Thats why the decision to strike was made. Its not an easy decision either because during this time gm workers will make a strike wage of just 250 a week. [ cheers ] General Motors workers across the country walked off the job at midnight. More than 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers went on strike after contract negotiations failed. We are standing up for fair wages. We are standing up for Affordable Quality Health care. We are standing up for our share of the profits. Reporter its the unions First National strike since a twoday walkout in 2007. With the plants all going out at the same time, i think it will make it a lot more serious for General Motors to come to the table in good faith. I think theyll reach an agreement. Reporter in a video released by General Motors, executive Vice PresidentGerald Johnson said the automaker offered to invest more than 7 billion in plants and new product programs. Weve also offered wage increases and or lump sum increases over the life of this contract. Reporter the strike shuts down over 50 facilities in nine states. Peoples been worried for quite a while now. Reporter josh mohen works for a part supplier in indiana that deals with gm. We have a lot of customers and a little stockpiled, but i dont know how long it will last. Reporter strike pay for uaw members is 250 per week. Analysts at Cox Automotive say gm has 11 weeks worth of cars, trucks, and suvs. Those same analysts say gm has enough vehicles on dealer lots to last about 77 days at the current sales pace. Just a day earlier, secretary of state mike pompeo put the blame squarely on iran. Secretary pompeos made clear that the Iranian Regime is responsible for this attack on civilian areas and infrastructure vital to our Global Energy supply. And were not going to stand for that. Work is already underway to restore production. The wall street journal reports saudi officials said onethird of crude output will be restored today. Some economists say the longer it takes saudi arabia to reve prices at the pump could increase by as much as 50 cents a gallon. Drivers on the west coast could be hit the hardest since that region accounts for nearly half of all u. S. Crude imports from saudi arabia. It comes days after the company reached a tentative 12 billion settlement with many of the state and local governments suing it. The bankruptcy filing was anticipated. More than 2,500 lawsuits were filed against purdue. About half the states have not signed on to the settlement. Several plan to object it to it, rather, in bankruptcy court. Supreme Court JusticeBrett Kavanaugh is at the center of another political controversy involving alleged sexual misconduct.
