BILLERICA An effort to overturn the fall Town Meeting vote to approve a $20 million project to renovate Billerica’s town center moved one step forward last week after a campaign to put the issue on a direct townwide ballot appeared to gather more than enough signatures.
A petition to bring a controversial plan to renovate Billerica’s town center to a direct town wide vote has gathered about 1,000 signatures as of Monday morning after representatives at the fall Town Meeting approved the plan last week.
The Billerica Select Board voted 3-2 Monday to reallocate $3.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to the proposed town center renovation project to take advantage of lower interest rates from a state loan for a different project.
The Select Board voted 3-2 Monday evening to approve the preliminary plan for the town center redesign project, setting it up for a vote at the fall Town Meeting in October.
