Indian benchmark indices ended marginally higher on Monday, paring most of early gains, weighed down by losses in realty and FMCG space, weak Asian markets, falling US futures and rising oil prices. The BSE Sensex ended 35.75 points or 0.07 per cent higher at 50,441.07 and the NSE Nifty closed at 14,956.2, up by 18.1 points or by 0.12 per cent. Indian shares ended flat on Monday, as losses in top non-banking finance company HDFC countered gains in information technology and energy stocks, while top gold financing company Muthoot Finance fell after the death of its chairman.
Key equity indices extended early gains and hit fresh intraday high in morning trade. The Nifty was trading near the 15,000 mark. Banks, metals and energy shares were in demand. At 10:26 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 471.44 points or 0.94% to 50,876.76. The Nifty 50 index added 157.55 points or 1.07% to 14,919.10.
Investors rejoiced after the US Senate approved the U.S. President Joe Biden s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index gained 1% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 1.30%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1891 shares rose and 730 shares fell. A total of 173 shares were unchanged.

BENGALURU Indian shares opened higher on Monday after two consecutive sessions of falls, helped by financial and energy stocks, while top gold financing company Muthoot Finance dropped after the death of its chairman.
The blue chip NSE Nifty 50 index rose 0.62% to 15,031.03 and the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex climbed 0.66% to 50,740.06 by 0358 GMT.
