In an interview with the Licking County Library in 2014, George Croom Jr. spoke about the discrimination he encountered as a black man while serving his country.
While stationed in Virginia, he was told by a white man that he needed to cross the street when approached by white people using the same sidewalk. Croom was quick to relate that not all white’s treated them this way. “One of the problems that I had I remember when I got on a bus and this was in Virginia. I got on and sat next to a real old white lady. I was sitting there and she started talking to me. I started talking and the bus driver came to a stop right in the middle of the street. He came back and said, ‘hey sailor you got to go back to the bus.’ I didn’t know why I had to go back there. Well, anyway, what happened was as I got up, this little white lady grabbed my collar. She threw me back down on the seat,
