Parish council approves £1550 funding to help reduce crime in west Swindon

A charity is set to receive £1,550 to help reduce crime in west Swindon with a poster and social media campaign. West Swindon Parish Council approved a grant application from Crimestoppers, the organisation best known for passing on information about crime to the police and offering rewards. The project aims to deter crime in the area’s hotspots, using posters and outdoor banners to raise awareness while setting up a digital campaign on Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. At their full meeting, councillors wanted to know how the money would be used in areas of high footfall like the village centres rather than places like Lydiard Park and gardens, which was more appealing.

Complaints over LED zebra crossing lights being too bright in Hay Lane

LED lights installed to help improve safety at a danger crossing in West Swindon have sparked complaints. A resident living near the zebra crossing in Hay Lane – where a teenager suffered terrible injuries after being hit by a car in 2016 – says the ultra-bright bulbs are shining into their property. West Swindon parish councillors discussed the issue during a planning and environment committee meeting earlier this week. The borough’s highways team told the parish council to allow the vegetation along the side of the road to grow slightly higher in order to block the light. But during the meeting, the committee agreed that it was not a sustainable solution.
