The group Black Women for a Better Education was successful Tuesday night in the Pittsburgh Public Schools board elections. Its endorsed candidates, Tracey Reed and Gene Walker, will represent Districts 5 and 9. Sala Udin was also backed by the group and will begin his second term serving Hill District and East End communities. The board will begin a search for a new superintendent in December after new members are sworn in.
Voters in the southern part of the city will determine a new school board representative next week. But only one candidate has been publicly campaigning. Tracey Reed, who is backed by a new political group, Black Women For A Better Education, won the Democratic primary with nearly 60 percent of votes.
In the only competitive race for the Pittsburgh Public Schools board, a challenger backed by a new PAC takes on an incumbent who says she deserves the position. Veronica Edwards lost the May primary to Gene Walker by 114 votes.
