i m erin burnett. outfront tonight we have breaking news. a surge of the day. stocks just jumped to the moon. dow and s&p had their single best day for the entire year. the dow jumps 287 points. so you can say why, the sheer excitement. the ebulliance. have we suddenly solved all of our economic problems? have we stumbled upon a machine gun of silver bullets? have we found our terminator? not so fast, arnold. today we got shot up with rubber bullets. it was an arsenal of talk but no concrete action. in europe, the central bank chief said officials stand ready to act and there were reports of talks of a possible deal to bail out banks in countries in crisis like spain. that s a lot of talk. being ready to stand by is different than standing by. here at home, the fed said it may be ready to take further action to help spur the economy, extending unprecedented efforts to ease credit. now, that s still talk and not action. is this what we have come to, so desperate, hanging on to
outfront tonight, secret talks. secret talks in congress to save america from fiscal implosion. secret talks happen all the time, and 99% of them fail. but we are rooting for the 1% chance that these finally succeed. because america needs a grand bargain to prevent our debt rising to twice the size of our economy and to prevent a recession really, really soon. today fed chief ben bernanke, the man who has twisted and turned to get interest rates to zero to try to help this country said now congress must act. i urge congress to come to agreement on that well in advance so as not to push us to the 12th hour. if no action were taken and the fiscal cliff were to kick in in its full size, i think it would be very likely that the economy would begin to contract. contract means get smaller. it means recession. and people talk a whole lot about this fiscal cliff, but sometimes, you know, it kind of blurs together. so what exactly are we talking about? to be honest, this cliff is
security secrets. the leaks are the source of how president obama and his aids pick targets for drones. the other detailed iran s nuclear program. the fbi confirmed it is investigating that leak. senator john mccain says the fbi is fine but he wants an outside special counsel to lead the investigation. he said he suspects the obama administration is leaking this information to make the president look good. the portrayal of the president in these stories is of why usually nothing short of heroic. i agree with the cyberwarfare but why should we reveal it to the enemy and take credit for something that obviously does not deserve to be well-known? president obama s spokesman called allegations of intentional leaking grossly irresponsible. in a very rare show of bipartisan anger, this afternoon, the democratic and republican leaders of the house and senate intelligence committee say these leaks threaten to do iminent and ir represent parable damage to the committee. just momen
