3 Easy Ways to Make Your Camp Kitchen More Sustainable

Trying to be as eco-friendly as possible while recreating outdoors can often feel like an overwhelming task. There’s a lot to factor in when considering your ecological footprint. Starting out small like changing up your approach to cooking at camp is much a more manageable step toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Here are some tips on how to be greener on your next night around the campfire. Think About Refillable Fuel Options In 2019, contributor Ryan Wichelns explained that the ubiquitous green one-pound propane bottles we all use for camp stoves are incredbily difficult to recycle. So if you use a gas-powered stove, consider ditching the single-use cans that fuel them in favor of refillable propane options. After all, we use big reusable propane tanks to heat up our backyard grills, so why not our car camping stoves? In the above video, contributor Bryan Rogala also outlined his favorite options, like the Ignik Gas Growler Deluxe ($150) and the Flame King Refillabl

Hoka s New Hikers Look Crazy but Feel Great

I was ready for a wild-looking shoe when I opened the box containing Hoka’s newest hiker, the TenNine GTX, which features a fish-tail heel that extends inches behind a normal shoe’s terminus. What really caught my eye, though, wasn’t the kicks but a caveat printed on a small card  advising me not to drive a car or walk down stairs while wearing them.  I’ve experienced a lot of warnings in the nearly eight years I’ve been Outside’s Gear Guy “These skis are transcendent in pow but chatter brutally in crud” or “This air mattress is crazy light but sounds like a jet engine when you roll over,” et cetera but needing to change your hiking shoes to drive your car? Or never descending stairs? It’s a lot to ask, especially for a shoe that costs $250. It felt like too much. I wondered if Hoka had gone too far down the rabbit hole with the TenNine.

We all could use a break. A break from the stress of the day, the larger problems we deal with during a global pandemic, and especially the endless news feeds we scroll that remind us of it all. In the spirit of unplugging, here are some products that help nudge us away from our glowing rectangles if just for a little bit. A Journal Stepping away from the screen and using a pen and paper to write can do wonders for your mental health. Journaling is an activity that five-time Olympic Trials qualifier Becky Wade swears by: “When we take time to explore and label our emotions, we’re able to organize our cluttered minds and make sense of our experiences,” she writes. “A cascade of positive mental and physical effects which include lowered blood pressure, increased immunity function, better digestion, and improved sleep follow suit.”

6 Snow Toys for Powder-Loving Families

from Amazon A quality snow tube isn’t cheap, but my family has broken enough plastic sleds over the years to fill up our own landfill. So, it’s time to invest in a sturdy tube, like this beast that’s big enough to handle multiple pilots (50 inches across with a 500-pound limit). Bonus: Tubes are fast and offer a softer landing when things go airborne.
