Zoar Village Council votes 5-1 to evict fire department

Barb Limbacher and Nancy Molnar The Times-Reporter ZOAR A five-member majority of Zoar Village Council has voted to evict the fire department from the fire station. The lone no vote came from Councilwoman Judy Meiser, mother of Charles R. Meiser, chief of the Zoar Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. Voting in favor of eviction were council members Gayle Potelicki, Joe Potelicki, Tom Klingaman, David Irwin and Mark Gaynor.  They took action at a special meeting held Friday. It was the first council meeting for Gaynor since he was chosen to fulfill the remainder of the council term held by Hans Fischer, who died March 30. Mayor Scott Gordon administered the oath of office to Gaynor. The term of office expires Dec. 31, 2023.

Jan. 12 meeting KEY ACTION Held the first reading of a resolution of a draft for a proposed fire contract between the village, Bolivar Fire Department and the Lawrence Township Trustees.   Discussion: Mayor Scott Gordon said the Village Solicitor Doug Frautschy has reviewed and updated the original resolution that council passed and has been in contact with the township attorney about the matter. The village currently does not have a fire contract with the Zoar Fire Department. The village has a contract for Emergency Medical Service with Bolivar EMS.  In another matter, council discussed the de-annexation of a portion of the Dover-Zoar Road on top of the Zoar levee. Council member David Irwin said the county would maintain the area. Legal Counsel will be consulted. Village Solicitor Doug Frautschy said according to the county map, the area is owned by the United States of America.
