Hain s OT winner sends No 2 UND to Frozen Faceoff title game

Junior forward scores sixth goal of season; UND to battle St. Cloud on Tuesday GRAND FORKS, N.D.  University of North Dakota junior wing  Gavin Hain couldn’t have picked a better time at Ralph Engelstad Arena late Monday night to score his first goal in his last 11 games. His sixth goal of the season, a blistering slap shot from the faceoff dot off a feed from  Jasper Weatherby, beat Denver goalie Magnus Chrona glove side at 8:37 of overtime to give the Fighting Hawks a 2-1 win over the University of Denver. The win sent the UND into Tuesday’s National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff championship game against St. Cloud State, the Hawks looking to add their first playoff title in the eight years of the NCHC to their regular-season championship this season.

Adams early goal, five-point night boosts UND to NCHC semifinals

Senior tallies UND’s first five-point game since 2014   GRAND FORKS, N.D. –-(UND Athletics) It didn’t take long Friday night for Miami University hockey coach Chris Bergeron to know his Redhawks were in trouble. University of North Dakota senior center  Collin Adams finished a 2-on-1 break with linemate  Jordan Kawaguchi just 14 seconds into the game with his backhand goal to ignite the fire in UND’s 6-2 victory over Miami in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff quarterfinals at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The early goal by Adams, the fastest by UND this season, triggered a flurry of three goals in the opening five minutes, 36 seconds as league champion North Dakota (19-5-1) eliminated last-place Miami (5-18-2) and advanced the Fighting Hawks into the semifinals on Monday. Adams finished with his first career 5-point game (2 goals, 3 assists) and the first by a UND player since Mark MacMillan had 5 points on Oct. 18, 2014 at Colorado College.

UND stays clean at home with 4-1 win over Omaha

Fighting Hawks move within striking distance of clinching fourth NCHC Penrose Cup   GRAND FORKS, N.D. –– There’s a reason why the Ottawa Senators of the NHL made  Jacob Bernard-Docker their first-round draft pick in 2019, the 26th player chosen overall from around the world in that draft. Bernard-Docker put his outstanding overall skills on full display Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena, figuring in on three of North Dakota’s four goals in a 4-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha. That win moved UND a win away (or a St. Cloud State loss Saturday) from clinching its second straight Penrose Cup as National Collegiate Hockey Conference champions.

NOTES: UND returning to Omaha, Baxter Arena

Adam Scheel registered his third shutout of the season to tally a 5-0 victory. ALL-TIME AGAINST OMAHA North Dakota is 24-13-1 all-time against the Mavericks, including wins in eight of the last 11. Last season, the teams split the season series, 2-2. Omaha’s 6-3 win at the REA on Jan. 10 was UND’s lone blemish to its home record last season (18-1-0). WILD 2020-21 More schedule changes abound as UND’s series with Denver has been shifted back a week. All four NCHC West teams had shakeups in their schedule for the next two weeks. North Dakota will now have an off week after the Omaha series, then host Denver Feb. 12-13.

The freshman from Alexandria, Va., made 18 saves in the first 20 minutes, the most by a Tiger goalie in one period this season.
