UP: Cremation grounds expand as Covid deaths mount

Lucknow/Varanasi, April 23 : Over the years, these cities have swelled in size but their cremation grounds have not - not till the second wave of pandemic arrived a few weeks ago.
The cremation grounds in Lucknow, Varanasi and Prayagraj are now unable to cope with the rush of bodies for cremation and pyres are now being lit on any open ground available nearby.
In Lucknow, the cremation grounds in Bhainsakund-renamed Baikunth Dham- and Gulala Ghat can no longer bear the burden of bodies that are coming in at an alarming frequency.
Varanasi: In view of the increasing requirements of Covid facilities for critical patients, the officials on Monday decided that a 1,000 bed facility will be developed at Banaras Hindu Universitys sports stadium with the help of the DRDO. This facility is likely to become functional in a fortnight.
The decision for establishing a 1,000-bed Covid facility in giant German hangers was taken at a meeting of the officials including divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal, district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma, municipal commissioner Gaurang Rathi, DRDO, BHU, CPWD and electricity and other departments under the leadership of MLC AK Sharma at circuit house on Monday.
Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the Covid-19 situation in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi via video conferencing on Sunday and directed officials to ramp up efforts to tackle the surge in cases and provide all possible assistance to the ill at the earliest.
The PM sought the latest figures of testing, beds, medicines, vaccines, manpower and treatment of Covid patients in the district. He thanked doctors and medical staff for doing their duty in this hour of crisis and urged them to use their experience of the first wave last year and move forward cautiously.

New Delhi [India], April 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reviewed the COVID-19 situation in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh through video conferencing, the Prime Minister s Office (PMO) said.
According to a statement issued by the PMO, during the meeting, the Prime Minister was apprised about testing, the availability of beds, medicines, vaccine, and manpower etc. for the prevention of coronavirus and proper treatment of infected patients.
