Salvos Salutes: Honoring hard workers and influential people in Johnson County

By Rod Sullivan 2020 is coming to a close, and it is time for honoring a few select Johnson County residents with that most treasured of honors, the Salvos Salute. This is the fifteenth annual set of awards, and there are always more people who deserve awards than there are awards to give. We live in a great county! Salvos Salutes do not have specific criteria, but you can bet that in general, most of the winners are courageous, advocate for peace and justice, have good ideas, speak truth to power, avoid hypocrisy and look out for the less fortunate. Without further ado, your 2020 Salvos Salutes go to:

Image: National Park Service. The Trump administration recently announced that it will remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list in the lower 48 states. The gray wolf population in those states, including Michigan, has reached more than 6,000 and has met recovery goals that make it unnecessary for protection, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The agency’s delisting decision has sparked promises of litigation by environmental organizations.

Out gay writer/director Levan Akin’s tender romantic drama And Then We Danced was the first queer feature from Georgia. Merab (Levan Galbakhiani) is a closeted dancer in the Georgian National dance company who falls for Irakli (Bachi Valishvili). They soon initiate a clandestine affair, however, the lovers also become rivals for a position in the main ensemble. How things play out, in both love and dance, form the emotional cores of this compelling film.
