The Great Game is famous for being the political, diplomatic and military confrontation that was played for most of the 19
th and early 20
th centuries. The two actors that played the game were Russian and British empires, and the grand strategy both employed during the Great Game was to seek influence and control in Afghanistan as well as the neighboring territories in Central and South Asia.
Even though the British colonists returned and the Soviet Union disintegrated, the Great Game never completely ended, and in the post-Soviet Union regional environment, its geopolitical focus and the grand strategy shifted from seeking ‘territorial controls’ to seeking control over the oil and gas reserves including the untapped reserves lying in the bed of the Caspian Sea. The dismal performance of PTI in the by-election of NA-249 Karachi is reflective of the growing under-confidence and distrust that people are increasingly demonstrating on the ability of the PTI government to address their woes. PPP won this seat after a huge gap of 23 years. Given the general disinterest and low turnout of voters in this by-election, it will be difficult for the PPP winner to claim that he rode to victory on the shoulders of people’s power. I think the victory was more determined by the majority of people that boycotted the elections and chose to stay back home.

Pakistan is most certainly on the threshold of building a new relationship with its Cold War rival. Some even see this new-found relationship with Russia helping Pakistan to make the much-needed transition from geo-strategic to geo-economic domain. How?
