any kind of safety pact. in the meantime, walmart has a different solution. that company says its factory monitors would conduct in-depth safety inspections at 100% of its bangladesh facilities and make them public. in other words the company would go it alone and conduct its own inspections. the plaza itself conducted its own inspections as well. in fact, the day before the building collapsed the owner of the plaza brought in an engineer to take a look at a few troubling developments in the building s infrastructure. here s what he found. this video filmed by a local television channel shows large cracks in the walls of the building which housed garment factories and a shopping center that may have hinted at a disaster to come. those are cracks in the building that the engineers saw before it collapsed. as the new york times reported the engineer examined three support pillars and concluded the building needed to be closed immediately.
in the exclusive interview. translator: i keep sleeping off and on. i couldn t see anything. it was so dark. there was a hole. i didn t know if it was dirty water or what type of water. i was thirsty so i drank. suddenly i heard the call to prayer. then i heard sounds. i heard the sounds of voices and i wondered where is the sound coming from? where is the sound coming from? i was really, really happy and i said, god, save me, god. reshma said her clothes had been torn off in the rubble. rescuers threw in a flashlight and that allowed her to find and change into a fresh set of clothing. but she seems to be doing okay. just an amazing story. and now the pressure is on the world s retailers to help improve safety at other bangladesh garment factories. more than a dozen major european clothing companies have agreed to this new safety plan including h & m but many retailers like walmart and the
the garments so that the business can run properly and the labor can get good salary. others say raise the price of the garment it goes right into the pockets of the political elite who will profit from the industry as well. i mean, it s, just seems to be such a big mess. what is the answer? well, exactly. there are two sides to this issue, one is the bangladesh government has to be pressured to be much more transparent, much more accountable and yes, much less corrupt in terms of the owners of these factories. you know, some 10% according to financial times and others, some 10% of elected parliament members there own garment factories, own this industry, and many more in parliament are business owners, so that s one big trouble. remember, this garment factory was owned by a man who was very closely tied to the ruling
as pleasing of a story. now well over 1,000 people dying in that tragedy, and certainly that tragedy putting the spotlight on awful conditions in which millions of people work in banglade bangladesh s garment factories. at last it is done. the crowning achievement on one world trade center. the workers this morning bolted that 408 foot spire on top of the building and a symbolic message to the world after the 9/11 attacks. that building soars now to a height of 1,776 feet in recognition of the year united states declaring independence 1776. congratulations. he is a prince. he is also a veteran of war, afghanistan. chopper pilot for the army. this morning britain s prince harry took part in a solemn ceremony at the tomb of the unknown in arlington national cemetery in virginia.
