Planners defer decision on regeneration of historic Gardiner Haskins building
By Adam Postans, Thursday Apr 1, 2021
Councillors have delayed a decision on controversial plans to regenerate a landmark Bristol building and create a 20-storey tower block amid concerns over the number of affordable homes.
Development control committee members were recommended to approve the £175m transformation of the Grade II-listed Soapworks, formerly home to Gardiner Haskins, in Old Market, which would support 2,000 local jobs.
But they were uneasy about the “unusual” amount of flexibility that granting permission would give developers First Base, while several prominent consultees, including Historic England, objected.

Charges at Bristol City Council’s car parks and city centre streets are set to go up, more than doubling in some cases.
A CIRENCESTER-BASED business has donated and fitted a brand new oven and hob at South Cerney Playgroup. Gardiner Haskins made the donation over the weekend to ensure the playgroup don t go without a working oven during one of the coldest months of the year. At the start of January, the playgroup found themselves in the unfortunate position of having an oven and hob that did not work. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the playgroup have been unable to do any fundraising for nearly a year and therefore did not have the funds to replace it. Jo Hanson, who is a member of the committee, reached out to Gardiner Haskins to ask if they could provide a discount for a replacement.
