Jonglei health ministry to shut down illegal clinics, drug stores The ministry of health in South Sudan’s Jonglei State has embarked on a plan to shut down all the unlicensed private clinics, pharmacies, and drug stores amidst reports of patients dying while being treated at such facilities.  Atong Kuol Manyang, the state health minister told Radio Tamazuj that all the private health facilities in the state capital, Bor town, have until May 24 next week to seek the ministry’s approval to operate risk closure.  She pointed out that they came up with the administrative decision after the health ministry’s survey showed that more than 50 percent of private clinics in Bor operate illegally. 

Bor court adjourns activist David Garang Goc s trial

Jonglei Civil Society Network chairperson David Garang Goc The trial of David Garang Goc, the Jonglei Civil Society Network chairperson, has been adjourned until Monday, May 17, 2021, amid his lawyer questioning the court’s competence.  Garang, who was arrested on defamation charges had accused the state government of allegedly embezzling relief food meant for the flood victims in Jonglei state, was released last Saturday pending a trial on Monday.  However, Deng Akoi, the Bor County Court judge Monday adjourned the first hearing of the case.  James Kachuol, the accused’s defense lawyer told Radio Tamazuj, “My client was charged under Section 289 of the Penal Code Act, which is about defamation. Yesterday, no proceedings took place. As Garang’s defense lawyer, yesterday, I had an objection that a county court does not have jurisdiction over a defamation case. And again, the prosecutor was not there. So, those reasons led to the adjournment.”

Activist David Garang Goc released, to face trial on Monday David Garang Goc, the chairperson for the coalition group Jonglei Civil Society Network, was released on Saturday after being in Police custody for two days in Bor town.  The civil society activist was arrested on Thursday morning after he accused the state government of allegedly embezzling food donations meant for the flood victims in the state.  The state police commissioner, Joseph Mayen Akoon, told Radio Tamazuj that the activist was released pending a court trial Monday.  “We released activist Garang Goc as required by the law.  He has been charged with spreading false information about the government. And on Monday, he will be tried at the court,” he said.

Activist detained in Bor David Garang Goc, the chairperson for the coalition group Jonglei Civil Society Network, is currently being held under police custody in the Jonglei State capital, Bor town, his colleagues and police have confirmed.  The civil society activist was detained on Thursday morning.  “Our chairperson has been arrested over the statement he gave about the food donated by the president but was being sold at the market. On Wednesday after he gave the statement, he was summoned by the National Security Service (NSS) for an investigation and released, Ngang Philip, the network’s finance secretary told Radio Tamazuj.
