o donnell: chess is a game of make-believe, kings and queens, pawns and rooks. so what does that have to do with real life? well it turns out, quite a bit. here s cbs jamie yuccas. it s the most unique piece in the game. reporter: for 12-year-old andre, chess is more than just a game. i use a lot of stuff they learned on the chessboard in real life, like think before you move. think before i act out. reporter: he s just one of thousands of students from some of l.a. s toughest neighborhoods learning to play. i learned to play chess at age 13. it was a pivotal, pivotal moment in my life. reporter: damen fletcher grew up in compton. after going away to college, he came home to find his childhood friends struggling. some of them had fallen into the prison system, gang life, and drugs. and i just wondered why did i have such a different outcome? and it was chess.
whatever, i m going to gravitate toward that. then we replace the fathers, we have so many men who want to stand up. before we bring in the feds and anyone else, let s work on the resources we have right now. martha: let me ask you for a bit of your personal story. what turned you around? you have a bullet lodged in your head, correct? correct. martha: what made you decide to leave gang life? you know what, it had been my fourth stint. i had been to jail, i was a three-time loser. the fourth one woke me up. when i get out and this was right before i got shot. i got shot, and i face the fact that this is it. how many times can you go through a tragedy? how many times before you really wake up? what happened with the kids is that they are learning, just like we saw earlier with the clip, the kids shoot into this crowd. so if the kids aren t trained how to shoot a gun, we have all
The VPD-led task force was launched in 2017 as a response to increasing gang violence. It included officers from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC, the RCMP, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), and local municipal police departments.
“Together, the team launched several projects under the Tourniquet umbrella, including Projects Tariff, Temper, Triplet and Territory,” VPD spokesperson Constable Tania Visintin said in a statement.
A total of 27 people were convicted as a result of the task force. Convictions against these individuals include participation in a criminal organization, murder conspiracy, firearms trafficking, and drug trafficking.
Additionally, the task force has seized more than 170 firearms, over 10 kg of fentanyl, 40 kg of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine, and more than $2 million in cash, jewelry, and high-end vehicles.

A senior gang leader who has been outspoken about helping broken people make positive changes in their lives has been charged with importing and distributing methamphetamine.
Name suppression has today been lifted from Mark Anthony Griffiths, or Griff , who was a longstanding member the Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom when he was arrested in November following a covert police investigation.
The chapter has generated headlines in recent years for establishing an all-female chapter, guarding their local mosque after the terror attacks in Christchurch and delivering food to 3000 vulnerable people during Covid-19 lockdown.

Surrey RCMP’s End Gang Life awareness initiative aims to educate youth on the dangers of organised crime. (flickr/Province of British Columbia)
The City of Surrey’s Community Safety department launched the Empower Surrey website this month as part of the Surrey Anti-Gang Family Empowerment program which aims to address the rise of gang life and violence in the community.
It was created together with local youth who gave firsthand information about the current challenges they face. The website caters to parents, caregivers, and trusted adults to increase their awareness and give support to affected individuals and families.
