IVY LEA, ONT. A popular seaway trail between Brockville and Gananoque is the centre of controversy this winter, as some residents plow portions of the paved trail and create hazards for snowmobilers. The waterfront trail, which includes a paved bicycle trail, runs adjacent on the north side of the 1000 Islands Parkway for almost 40 kilometres along the St. Lawrence River. While snowmobilers are not allowed to ride over the paved, unplowed portion of the trail, they use the north side right-of-way. Some say when the path is paved, it creates less room for them to navigate. They are pushing us into the trees and onto the roadways into the mailboxes, said Terri Andress, an avid snowmobiler for over 50 years. (It s) very, very, dangerous.

Mayors and chambers of commerce across the region are asking the province to lift the lockdown in Leeds and Grenville, on the strength of low infection numbers and in light of the pain that lockdown is inflicting on area businesses.
“Given our community’s consistently low COVID numbers, now is the time for the province to allow businesses to open their doors again. They simply cannot wait any longer,” said North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford, echoing remarks she made earlier in the week.

GANANOQUE – The 1,000 Islands Gananoque Chamber of Commerce held its annual business and awards gala on November 26. Due to COVID-19, the affair was virtual and conducted online.
“In March, when we were blocked by the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainty as we saw the province shut down,” Amber Scott, president of the 1,000 Islands Gananoque Chamber of Commerce, said. “And while there’s still a lot of questions about what the future will look like, we are so incredibly proud of this community who rallied around our vulnerable members and our small businesses. We had a fantastic list of nominees from all across industries and backgrounds. On behalf of the chamber, I want to first say congratulations to the nominees on your nominations and second to say thank you for your hard work and dedication to this community that we all love.”
