Farmers in the key citrus growing area of the Gamtoos valley, west of Gqeberha, have been told to prepare for “day zero” on July 1 as water levels in the nearby Kouga dam continue to drop.
Vegetable farmer Noel le Roux, who has to rent land hundreds of kilometres away in Steynsburg and Hofmeyr to meet his contract obligations, confirmed the situation was dire.

Farmers want to pump ‘empty’ Kouga Dam But irrigation board pours cold water on ambitious plan PREMIUM By Riaan Marais - 07 April 2021
Farmers downstream from the Kouga Dam believe water lying under the dam’s 3% “empty” mark can be pumped into the channels that feed irrigation systems along the Gamtoos River Valley.
However, the Gamtoos Irrigation Board (GIB) said it was not that simple because a number of factors needed to be considered, while the dam now stands just above 5% capacity.

A man driving a Volkswagen Polo died in a horrific head-on collision with a truck on the N2 near Gamtoos on Tuesday.
The accident happened at about 8am, on the downhill heading towards the Gamtoos River bridge.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the Polo’s driver died on impact, while the truck driver suffered minor injuries.
A case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
The front half of the Polo was completely destroyed.
