Again, my office is concerned not only about the quantity of beds that are disappearing, but also the quality of that care, as well. So what happened with the davies patients from st. Lukes, the quality was affected. What happened is was you have people dying when maybe they would not have died, and i cant judge that, i dont have any forensic capabilities had they remained at st. Lukes. Our office looks at the whole i dont call it an environmental scam, i call it a supply matched up with the demand, which needs better data, not only to subacute, but for care, longtermcare longterm care s. N. F. Beds, for all the people aging in the very various supervisorial districts. This is a citywide issue. Thank you very much. Thank you. We will go ahead and open it up to Public Comment. I wanted to ask if there are any additional Family Members of any subacute patients. I know some are here. I will ask

Overall number in the law, the budget control act, requesting basically a little bit over 1 trillion. 1. 1 trillion as the law allows for. Within that number, he really departed from the budget control act numbers, and he requested a lot more for defense programs. About 54 billion for security related programs. And covers that with an equal amount of cuts in nondefense spending, 54 billion. So thats a violation of the budget control act there. But more than that, its very politically unpopular. Yes members really like the , defense spending increase, but they dont like taking it out of nondefense programs agriculture cut more than 20 . Transportation, federal housing programs cut 15 . Labor, health, Education Programs cut similarly. State Department Programs cut tremendously. And congress is rejecting that. They dont really have their own plan nailed down. While they are inclined to give a lot more to defense, they are not as interested in those nondefense spending cuts. It matters of
I call this hearing of the Senate Environment Public Works Committee to order and like to defer to the Ranking Member. I thank the chairman. I apologize to our witnesses, some of whom come quite a distance. The democratic leader in the senate has called for an emergency caucus meeting to discuss the issues leading up to the dismissal of james comey as fbi director and to discuss how we might move quickly to insure that a special prosecutor is assigned and put to work right away. And if i have the opportunity to return at the end of our caucus meeting, ill come back and perhaps some of my colleagues will as well. I appreciate the chairmans understanding of this and giving me the chance to give an Opening Statement first. Thank you this is important stuff. I am interested to learn more from our state witnesses about your experiences with the endangered species act. The roles that states play, the partnerships theyve cultivated and the lessons youve learned, challenges you face, and what
