Professors James Allan and Brian Levine of the UMass Amherst College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) have been named Fellows by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society.
The ACM Fellow recognition is the organization’s highest member grade, representing less than one percent of ACM members, who have been named for their “foundational accomplishments in computing and information technology.” The two are part of a group of 95 new fellows representing 71 universities, companies and research centers from around the world.

Computer Science academic recognised for outstanding accomplishments
Professor Graham Cormode from the University of Warwick has been recognised for his contribution to Computer Science by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), by being named a 2020 fellow.
The ACM is the world’s leading learned society for computer science, Professor Cormode is recognized for his contributions to data summarisation and privacy enabling data management and analysis. His work on data streams and sketching has been widely implemented in many high tech companies and organisations, including Google, Netflix and Twitter.
He is among 95 ACM Fellows, representing universities, corporations and research centres around the world, who are celebrated for their wide-ranging and fundamental contributions in areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, computer graphics, virtual reality, and more.

The accomplishments of the 2020 ACM Fellows have driven innovations that ushered in significant improvements across many areas of technology, industry, and personal life.
The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM Members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.

The world’s largest computing society has recognized Sudeep Pasricha for “contributions that propel the digital age.”
The Colorado State University Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering leads research on core technologies that enable our hyper-connected world, from self-driving cars to smart cities. He was named a 2020 Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery, or ACM, for his outstanding scientific contributions to the field of computing.
“The active participation of ACM members, in our organization, and in the field more broadly, is the foundation of a global scientific society,” ACM President Gabriele Kotsis said in a release.
Xue Liu named Distinguished Member of ACM
The William Dawson Professor at the School of Computer Science received the recognition from the world s largest and most prestigious society of computing professionals.

Prof. Xue (Steve) Liu of McGill’s School of Computer Science has been recognized as a 2020 Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery, which describes itself as “the world’s largest computing society” with a mandate to “raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues.” The ACM has 100,000 members around the world, representing universities, research institutions and the private sector.
In 2017, Prof. Liu was awarded the Mitacs Professor Award for Outstanding Leadership.
