NP: “Coconut” is a racial slur that as you mentioned has been used in many ways to denote someone who is “white on the inside.” Growing up, I felt both harmed by the erasure of my Indian identity by white folks as I conformed to whiteness, and then faced backlash from Indian folks for doing so. I wanted to reclaim this word and show that if I am to be a “coconut,” then this book is what a coconut looks like, in all its complexities. There’s no one way to be Indian, or Asian, or brown those are just the ways that I am, and the things that make me who I want to be.

Poet Laureate virtual reading
The New Mexico Poet Laureate Program and Southwest Word Fiesta will be sponsoring Poetas del Sur, a virtual poetry reading by 20 poets from southern New Mexico, co-hosted by State Poet Laureate Levi Romero and Silver City Poet Laureate Eve West Bessier. This free event will take place via Zoom at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 11.

Yard and bake sale
Spring is here and the First Christian Church Ladies’ Council has lots of special items for your home or garden. Please mark your calendars because you are invited to the council’s yard and bake sale at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, at the Fellowship Hall located at the corner of Maple and Copper streets.
There will be items galore including clothes, housewares, books, tools, electronics and maybe even furniture.

Diabetes online program
A Diabetes Self-Management Program will provide a free online workshop to help those living with diabetes develop new skills. The program includes a live six-week workshop using an electronic device and an internet connection. Learn how to better manage your type 2 diabetes.
The free course is open to families, friends and caregivers.
Live online classes will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays on consecutive dates beginning March 2 and ending April 6, 2021. The classes will be on Zoom.
