Funeral undertakers vow to continue protest, set to defy interdict By James Mahlokwane Share Pretoria - Funeral undertakers who clashed with the police during a protest outside the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria CBD on Tuesday will defy the court interdict and resume picketing today. The secretary-general of the Unification Task Team of the Funeral Industry, Kgomotso Langa, told the Pretoria News they intended to shut down the department’s offices again today. She said: “We hear that the department obtained a court interdict preventing us from protesting. It was never served to us as the supposed correspondents.”

UNDERTAKERS VOW TO SHUT DOWN HOME AFFAIRS Sun Reporter Photo: Raymond Morare. UTT made the threats on Tuesday, 11 May saying if all theirs demands were not met they’d go ahead with their threat on Wednesday, 12 May. Among their grievances was that funeral parlours should be allowed to rent storage space from each other and that the red tape is sorted out to help start-up parlours succeed. The undertakers want certificates of competence not to form part of the designation number training and examination requirements.

Crackdown to expose funeral industry rip-off merchants

Rip-off merchants in the funeral industry have been warned, with the state government and consumer watchdog sharpening their knives over dodgy practices. Queenslanders have been asked to share their horror stories in dealing with unscrupulous business people who they feel may have preyed on them in their time of vulnerability in a survey open until Friday. Run by the ACCC, it follows concerns from chair Rod Sims around anti-competitive conduct, deceptive and misleading practices, opaque pricing and unconscionable conduct and appeals by him for whistleblowers to come forward. The Palaszczuk Government and ACCC have been deeply concerned of reports of unconscionable conduct and price gouging in the funeral industry.
