NAU Stuns Portland State, Wins First Big Sky Tournament Game Since 2015
The NAU men’s basketball team won its first Big Sky Tournament game in six years as the tenth-seeded Lumberjacks upset seventh-seeded Portland State, 77-66, in the first round in Boise, Idaho. Luke Avdalovic had a career day, leading NAU with 26 points, including hitting seven three-pointers. NAU shot an incredible 75-percent from three point range, hitting 12-of-16 three pointers. Keith Haymon added 13 points and Ajang Aguek had 11 points in the win. NAU did lose forward Nik Maines in the first half with an ankle injury after he scored eight points and was perfect from the floor. NAU advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals against second-seeded Eastern Washington. The two teams didn’t play this year, due to COVID protocol measures. NAU Falls To Top-Ranked Gonzaga On The Road Monday
The NAU men’s basketball team took on the Gonzaga Bulldogs Monday and it didn’t go well. The nation’s top ranked team went on a 10-0 run to start the game and pulled away from there as the Zags beat the Lumberjacks, 88-58, in Spokane. Cameron Shelton led the Jacks with 20 points and nine rebounds. It’s the fourth straight game with 20 or more points for the NAU guard. Jay Green added 12 points in the loss. The Jacks are done with the non-conference season and will play all Big Sky schools going forward. They will travel to Moscow, Idaho to take on the winless Idaho Vandals Thursday and Saturday. Thursday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. with the pregame show starting at 6:30 p.m. on KAFF Country 93.5/AM 930 in Flagstaff and Fun Oldies 97.9 in Prescott.
NAU Plays Best Game Of The Season So Far, But Falls To Texas State 70-65
The NAU men’s basketball team played their best game of the season so far, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell to the Texas State Bobcats in Denver, 70-65. Cameron Shelton led the Jacks with 22 points and true freshman Carter Mahaney added 14 points off the bench for the Jacks, who fall to 0-4 on the season. Carson Towt added 11 points in the loss. NAU shot 57-percent from the field and 37-percent from three point range. The Jacks are back in action Tuesday against the Denver Pioneers.
