and obviously, about freddie gray, but about this situation, at this point, i don t think anybody has a handle on exactly where this is going. i said earlier, it feels like the beginning of the situation, not even the middle or certainly not the end. ron, i want to jump in here, we have the police commissioner in baltimore speaking right now. staged in or around mondawmin mall at the time the time the school, they congregated on the north side of the mall. we moved up what we call platoons to that area. the officers saw cinder brick damage, stones being thrown at them. the officers proceeded northbound to push the youth in a northerly direction. the officers got caught on an incline to which a number of my officers got injured. i had one of my officers knocked out, hit in the head. he was taken to the hospital. i just checked on him.
and north street. they started to ransack cvs in criminal acts of vandalism and taking of property. we were able to assemble resources from out of town to get up there in a rapid manner. we took the corner back as we sustained mondawmin mall. and made sure it was stable. we were able to move those resources down from pennsy moving southward. we then brought other resources that moved from the south, to pennsy and we took that intersection back. we started to push in a westbound direction as we saw more looting taking place just west of that area, as we moved, a large contingent, we had police officers moving in that direction. i was very pleased and surprised that we had ministers come out. congressman elijah cummings tried to calm the young people
w nbc reporter markc santia is with a pastor. reporter: chris, this is all that is left right now. you can see firefighters are putting out the hotspots. this is one man s hopes and dreams, dr. dante hickman, sr., doctor, for eight years this is sort of what you were hoping and envisioning for the community. and in one night it is gone. for eight years we have been seeking to reinvest in the community to see substantive change for the community, housing development for the senior citizens and for young people alike. we wanted to take up the slack that johns hopkins had missed. they created a boundary line of their development and there was no development plans for this area. but the church, after being here for 80 years, sought to reinvest it s funds in acquiring property and work affordable housing.
in that community that was totally destroying the places where they have to live. tomorrow they have to go to the same stores that they tore apart. and the stores burped down are the same infrastructure where they need to survive in the next coming months. after that, we had trouble at lexington market and responded, approximately about 50 officers excuse me, it s been a long day. 50 officers to the market where we secured that, and did not sustain much damage. we then got calls off the 1700 block of monument that we had looting there. we responded with multiple units there to sustain that area. we re seeing a number of small car fires. we re seeing a number of street fires, basically in pennsylvania, fulton area, again, which has been the cornerstone of the problem, the vast majority of the day. those are the key points. i think we re still getting control of the pennsy area.
he is doing better. i had an officer with his kneecap damaged, there again at shock trauma. two more officers injured fairly seriously. all are going to be okay but sustained heavy damage in their bodies by flying debris, rock, sticks, bottles, anything from what appeared to be high school students in our school system did out there in the streets. as our officers proceeded to push them out of that area they moved down to the area of north and pennsy where them and others attacked a police car, broke out the windows, stomped on it. i believe you have information on that. very concerned that i had an officer trapped in that vehicle. the officer had removed themselves and were able to shelter inside a store and were able to get resources down there to help push that crowd down there. they ended up south at pennsy
