and obviously, about freddie gray, but about this situation, at this point, i don t think anybody has a handle on exactly where this is going. i said earlier, it feels like the beginning of the situation, not even the middle or certainly not the end. ron, i want to jump in here, we have the police commissioner in baltimore speaking right now. staged in or around mondawmin mall at the time the time the school, they congregated on the north side of the mall. we moved up what we call platoons to that area. the officers saw cinder brick damage, stones being thrown at them. the officers proceeded northbound to push the youth in a northerly direction. the officers got caught on an incline to which a number of my officers got injured. i had one of my officers knocked out, hit in the head. he was taken to the hospital. i just checked on him.
you can t have it both ways. mayor, what does it take to bring things under control? we re working around the clock to bring order. that is why you know, i spent the big portion of the day working to put together additional resources so we could bring calm to the city. we worked on making sure we got the executive order right to be able to give people enough time to know that they were putting the curfew in place. we worked with the school system to make sure there was a daytime curfew in place since schools were going to be closed. there were lots of t s and i s to get it right in ferguson there were some who said having troops on the street aggravated the situation. what do you say about that? we will bring order. it s very clear that i am not interested in exacerbateing the
the investigation can be done right, is that correct? right. we don t want to rush to justice. we don t want that. we want justice. we want accurate factfinding, no matter how long it takes as long as it does not get stretched out unreasonably, we want to know all the details of this investigation so that we can decide as a community what to do next. we re not interested in pre-judging the situation, that is what young people do. we re too old for that. we ve learned the hard way that you can really be screwed by the missing facts. we want a responsible investigation that is thorough, complete, real. unbiased. and then we ll add it to the investigation that we re doing. so there will be four investigations. the police. marilyn mosey, about whom we have great hope.
the senior center and church that s a fire burning, several cars on fire throughout the city. we should note for context in relation to the massive riots in 1968, the unrest today has been limited compared to that. obviously quite a bit of destruction and businesses broken into and looting. property damaged, police cars burned other cars burned. we ve seen all of that. police pelted with rocks. again, in the context of the 1968 riots which were massive and burned down swaths of the city, we have not seen anything on that scale in baltimore. hopefully as of yet. of course, you can tell just how tense the situation is there. that s tactical vehicle rolling through the streets. many on streets at this hour. some elders had been dispatched through the city earlier tonight to try to calm things. a unity rally of clergy walking down the streets at one hour. the scene, though, that you can
in riot gear are just trying to keep this area clear and watch their backs and watch these side streets coming into this main intersection and let the firefighters do their work safely. but there seems to be a group of people down there i can hear some yelling and screaming. i saw there were people running around in the streets. not sure exactly what is going on. it s not clear what s going on. a lot of these are little hot pocket corners. we have been driving around for the past couple of hours and we ve seen fires and police walking around on the streets. we ve seen a number of people arrested and taken down, one man who was making a u-turn in front of the officers, he apparently got too close or said the wrong thing. they took him out of his car and took him off, trying to ease things off. we re talking to a lot of residents here who are angry and frustrated and mad about the whole situation.
