The family of Army Staff Sgt. Alfred "Fred" Brazel has received one of the largest awards to date under a law that allowed service members to file medical malpractice claims.
House Homeland Security Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson said the service's failure to investigate a 2018 report shows the service doesn't take allegations seriously.
After a string of sailors assigned to the USS George Washington took their own lives in 2021 and 2022, the Navy opened an investigation to see if there were any commonalities that would suggest action should be taken.
The violence has included deliberately striking civilian targets and committing acts of torture, sexual violence and forced imprisonment of the occupied population, according to international investigators.
