In January 2019, St. Joseph County was the first county in Indiana to be officially accepted into AARPâs Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities program. While I was proud to achieve this distinction, the real work is ahead of us all.
Reimagining the community to be more friendly and welcoming to people of all ages first requires determining a baseline of where we are now. That is why the first step of this five-year program is to conduct a survey to determine which areas of focus need the most attention.
The survey is open to any St. Joseph County resident 45 years of age or older, and can be accessed online at http://sjcindiana.com/aarpsurvey. Paper copies of this survey can also be picked up at any St. Joseph County Public Library branch, and focuses on housing, outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation and streets, health and wellness, social participation, inclusion and education opportunities and volunteering and civic engagement.
