The Gazette in recent weeks has featured a series of articles on Bedford Countyâs history in conjunction with its 250th anniversary celebration this year. Mixing with that series, with be another series on 13 days throughout the year designated as âBedford County Ethnic Holidays.â Cinco de Mayo Day was celebrated on Wednesday, May 5.
The American Community Survey, compiled between 2008 and 2012 and being the most recent analysis, identified 1.2% of the total population of Bedford County as descending from Hispanic or Latino ancestors.

1. State Fair of Texas, Dallas
The State Fair of Texas is home to the original corn dog, the beloved meat on a stick that Americans can t get enough of. Fletcher s Corny Dogs debuted the very first corn dog in 1938. Back then, they were giving away their corny dogs for free, just to get people to try the unheard of food. Now, Fletcher s is selling between 500,000 and 600,000 dogs a year.

Co-founded in the summer 2017 by Marco Shalma, the Bronx Night Market had been serving up excellent food and a party-like vibe until the pandemic canceled the fun last spring. Shalma and his team made a brief go of it late last fall, but with cases climbing again and the weather getting cold, it wasn t the same at Fordham Plaza.
Last Saturday, though, marked the start of a new era for the popular market, with a festive spirit once again in the air, and pandemic protocols in place timed reservations for capacity limits and contact tracing, masks required, distanced tables, temperature checks at the gate.
