Afghan Women s Rights Activist, Brother Gunned Down – The Wilmington Journal

KABUL Freshta Kohistani, a prominent women’s rights activist and former provincial council member in Afghanistan, was shot and killed along with her brother in her hometown of Kohistan district in Kapisa province on Dec. 24. The two were on a motorbike when gunmen opened fire, according to the Interior Ministry. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Kohistani, 29, led many protests on behalf of women’s rights and raised awareness on social media about violence against women in the country. She also participated in the presidential election campaign for Abdullah Abdullah. Kohistani was the second activist to be killed in as many days. Mohammad Yousuf Rasheed, the head of an independent election monitoring organization, was shot and killed in an ambush in Kabul on Dec 23.

Afghan air airstrikes in Helmand Kill 11 Al-Qaeda members

(Last Updated On: December 28, 2020) At least 11 Al-Qaeda members and two Taliban senior members killed during Afghan air forces airstrikes in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defense said. According to the ministry, these strikes were conducted in the Nawa district. These Al-Qaeda fighters used to train the Taliban to make bombs in Helmand, the ministry said. “Massoud Ahmad who was the facilitator for Al-Q fighters in Helmand is among those killed by the airstrikes,” the ministry claimed. Taliban did not comment yet. This comes after the ministry claimed on Saturday at least four Al-Qaeda and 15 Taliban fighters were killed in Afghan air force strikes in the Nawa district of Helmand province.

Targeted Killings are Attack on New Generation: Ghani President Ashraf Ghani in a cabinet meeting on Monday said that the attacks on journalists and civil society activists are an attack on a generation and an attempt to destabilize the country and demoralize the new generation.  Five journalists and two civil society activists have been killed in various incidents since November 7.  “Recent terrorist attacks on media, civil society and political activists and other members of our citizenry are attacks on a generation and on all the values of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” Ghani said. “The motive (behind the attacks) is to remove stability, trust and to create help helplessness among the new generation, particularly women in Afghanistan.”

Slain Activist Freshta Kohistani Laid to Rest December 27,2020 KAPISA - Women’s rights activist Freshta Kohistani and her brother, who were killed in an attack by unknown armed men on Thursday, were laid to rest in their hometown in Kapisa province on Friday. Their relatives blamed the government for failing to prevent targeted killings that have increased in recent weeks.  Kohistani’s burial saw the saddest moments when her young and only son Mustafa was seen screaming on her coffin and chanting ‘I want my mother.’  “My mother was innocent,” Kohistani’s son said. “She was serving this nation but why she was martyred?”
