Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage. It commemorates the date of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French invasion led by Napoleon III in 1862. The city of Freeport has many establishments that offer specials to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and our diverse community.
We also have a few new or expanding businesses to celebrate. A new salon, Ci Ci’s, has opened at 9 North Van Buren Ave.. Kurt Koester Studio at 26 W. Main St. in downtown has expanded to include a framing business. Both of these add destinations in our downtown. Congratulations to both of you.

FREEPORT Pretzel City celebrated its moniker Saturday as crowds gathered in downtown for a day of food, fun, shopping and entertainment.
The inaugural Pretzel Fest was also a jump start on recognizing National Pretzel Day, held Monday, and brought people together for socially distanced festivities.
The event, organized by Greater Freeport Partnership, kicked off the day with a barbecue competition in the morning with aromas to entice all residents and visitors.
It also featured performances by S&R Dance Team, La Danza de Los Viejitos - Folkloric Dance from Michoacán, Mexico, and a reenactment by Tim Connors as Benjamin Franklin. Pretzel City CrossFit supplied a community workout and burpee challenge, and Your Core Being had yoga in the street.

FREEPORT Borrowing on the theme “Sing, Fly, Soar Like a Bird,” the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society and Freeport Art Museum are partnering for an event called World Migratory Day at 10:30 a.m. on May 8 at Taylor Park.
Juliet Moderow of the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society has been working with Barry Treu of FAM to create a day that is part of an international celebration of migratory birds.
“The idea is to have kids put on wings made from materials supplied by the Freeport Art Museum to let them know what it is like to soar like a bird, Moderow said. We want the kids to get the feeling of how birds fly, stop, rest up for fuel and take to the sky.”

FREEPORT The Easter spirit was alive and well this past weekend during an Easter egg coloring event at the Freeport Public Library.
Conducted by staff from the Freeport Art Museum on Saturday, the coloring event gave those who attended a chance to create Easter memories and a souvenir to take home. It s not a lot of mess and fun too, said Barry Treu, director of education and exhibitions. It s all free. We re using wooden eggs so they don t break.
Once they arrived at the library, kids and adults got to pick out an egg and choose from an assortment of craft supplies and paint to decorate their eggs.
