Columbus Community was able to avoid inclement weather last night and still hold their mini track meet where three other schools made the trip.
The Wildcat boys finished second out of four with 133 points and Wapello won it all with 146. Seven events claimed gold including Kaden Amigon in the 200m (24.20), Freddy Vergara in the 800m (2:11), Triston Miller in the 110m hurdles (16.87), Isaac Acosta in the 1600m (4:59) and 3200m (10:47), Mason Hodges in the discus (133’7’’), and the 4x800m relay of Mason Hills-Carrier, Damian Vergara, Tim Hills-Carrier, and Tyler Humiston (9:43).
The Columbus girls tallied 38 points to place fourth and Wilton grabbed the title with 115. Averi Sipes nabbed the top spot in the 3000m (14:19), Libby White won the discus (90’5’’), and Michelle Diaz was first in the shot put (34’11’’).
After capturing their first meet win in four years on Thursday, the Columbus Community boys’ track team did not have to wait long this time to take another victory lap, as the Wildcats reigned supreme in the Sigourney Relays last night.
The Wildcats won their second straight by compiling 94 points that bested the 11 team field including five other area schools. Two events took home gold including Isaac Acosta in the 1600m (4:44) and Mason Hodges in the discus (137’8’’). Kaden Amigon was second in the 100m (11.30) and 200m (23.30) and picked up a third place finish in the long jump (18’4’’). Other second place events included Freddy Vergara in the 3200m (10:46), the 4x100m (45.70), and 4x800m relay (9:26). Other area schools in the standings included Highland sixth with 52 points, Winfield-Mt. Union seventh with 51 points, Sigourney eighth with 39 points, Keota ninth with 37, and WACO 11th with 17. For the first time since 2017, the Columbus Community boys enjoyed a victory lap around the track on Thursday when they won the Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mt. Union.
The Wildcats recorded 102 points on the evening to best second place New London with 96. A total of 17 Wildcats contributed to the scoring including two champions in Triston Miller with the 110m hurdles (16.98) and Mason Hodges in the discus (138’3’’). Runner-up events included 3200m run for Freddy Vergara (10:41), Kaden Amigon for long jump (19’2.5’’), and the 4x800m relay (9:32). Wildcat Head Coach Scott Dennler was ecstatic for his team to get their first crown in four years. “They took their victory lap and they were so happy. They have finished second three times, so to get over the hump and win was awesome. I was really happy for everyone especially our seniors, who have been grinding for six years. It was great to see.”
The Hillcrest Academy and Columbus boys and girls track teams travel to Donnellson tonight for the Hawk Relays at Central Lee High School.
Hillcrest last ran Monday at the Lion Relays at Lone Tree where they were led by Madelyn Fox’s championship in the 3000. The Raven boys saw Aaron Hershberger post two runner-up finishes, taking second in the 110 and 400 hurdles.
The Columbus boys last ran at Lone Tree a week ago where they placed third with 101 points. The Wildcats had five event runners-up including Kaden Amigon in the 400, Isaac Acosta in the one mile, Freddy Vergara in the two mile, Mason Hodges in the discus and the 4x800m relay team.
