if she s the vice president and the president put her in charge of this vice president harris needs to go down to the border and see this for herself. maybe she would then encourage president biden to reverse his policies that have failed. as i said the policy is hard enough. how do they deal with the politics? reporter: yeah, well this trip isn t happening in a vacuum, john, the criticism she has faced from republicans on this who have sought to conflate her role in dealing with the root causes with the situation happening directly at the border, that is all very much top of mind for the vice president and her team. they have fought over the last several weeks to try and change that perception and really emphasize that she is focused on these root kacauses. the trouble is there s not immediate impact to what she s trying to do in country here. the root causes are long-term systemic issues. while they re looking for short-term win here a lot of this is going to happen in the long

reversing roe. a couple of democratic senators tried to get him to vow to do that and he said, you know, no nominee should ever vow to vote in any way on any particular case, which is exactly right, frankly. yes. and then he also did repeat that it s an important precedent, roe v. wade, but he robustly defended a dissending opinion of his from last year when he split from the majority on the d.c. circuit which had allowed a teenage migrant to obtain an abortion over objections from the trump administration. he talked about the importance of the government s interests there and in doing so i think he signaled that he would be open to restrictions on abortion in a way that, you know, frankly isn t new given that he s an a nominee of president donald trump. but i think we saw enough of his view there. and more to come.
what of this plan is ever going see the light of day and who is going to work with this guy? you know, this speech couldn t have been better at just underscoring why the president frankly isn t going to go any where this year. many republicans will tell you if only privately this speech was the most disjointed rambling speech i have ever seen. it was like he could go to the teleprompter where he was supposed to talk about infrastructure. it did not get mentioned until one-third of the way into the speech and then give a paragraph from the teleprompter and he was off on any other number of topics, you name them. on a more serious note it was a
