Film festivals have moved online en masse in 2020 and 2021, cancelling large public gatherings while still allowing film fans to get their fix. This year’s Toronto Black Film Festival is no different, though its 2020 edition had the distinction of being one of the last big fests to take place before COVID-19 took hold.
“We were so fortunate,” says Fabienne Colas, founder and director of the festival, whose eighth edition ran last year from Feb. 12 through Feb. 17. “We were welcoming Spike Lee, we were all fired up, it was a full house. There was no social distancing.”

Black stories matter and how they’re told on-screen matters just as much. Created back in 2013 by founder Fabienne Colas, the Toronto Black Film Festival is hosted annually in February during Black History Month. It showcases eye-opening and powerful Black films from around the world that open up a real dialogue around social, socio-economic, and cultural issues. This year, the event will take place exclusively online from Feb. 10th to 21st with tickets already on sale.
NOW critics pick the best virtual events happening in Toronto and beyond this winter.
DesignTO
Kicking off with an online party featuring Maylee Todd, and DJs Fly Lady Di and Sigourney Beaver, the annual design festival is going “distanced and digital.” That means there will be 30 virtual digital projects (both free and ticketed), as well as window displays around town. Panels will focus on the city of Detroit, inclusive design and whether Canada needs a national architecture policy. •
Hot Docs Podcast Festival
Hot Docs’ annual weekend of aural pleasure might be limited to streaming this year, but the 2021 edition will still endeavour to expand the experience and appreciation of audio storytelling, offering Q&As with creators and hosts from shows like Pod Save America, Radio-lab, 99% Invisible and Reply All. (We’re looking forward to Pop Chat’s Elamin Abdelmahmoud and You’re Wrong About’s Sarah Marshall discussing the rise of pop-culture nostalgia.) •
