Battle of little big horn, the one armyindian encounter most people have heard of. My knowledge comes from high school, junior high school. I grew up in new york state. I remember reading in the magazines of the day, this is way back in 1958, 1959, probably most of you were not even around then. I remember reading in true west, frontier times, the pulp magazines of the day that provided fodder for my interests. I know they each carried articles on wounded knee. I remember asking my grandmother, who was born in 1881, she was a young girl, nine years old when wounded knee occurred, and about 1958, 59 i approached her and i can remember being in the room him in the house and i asked her if she remembered anything about hearing about wounded knee. I believe she told me that she thought vaguely that it sounded familiar to her. But that was a long time ago and she was an old lady. My first visit to the site came in 1969 when i was a graduate student at the university of south dakota. Wounded
Pass, whether youre going through the great salt lake, whether youre going to the oregon territory for free land, or whether youre going to california for gold. This represents some of the early explorers. The bestknown explorer in wyoming is none other than jim bridger. He wasnt that well traveled, but he did a great amount of documentation in his diary. He was the first white man, we believe, to have discovered the great salt lake. Its his diaries that the mormons will later follow to the great salt lake. When you compare jim bridger to another very famous explorer, john c. Free mount, when you compare his travels with some of the other explorers, you can see how some were very well traveled and some just stuck to certain areas. But theyre all important to the story of the trails west and why people came west, and these diaries that will be followed basically become the road maps for all of these trails down the way. It does not look overly intimidating but that but back then, there were not dams upstream and you did not have a regular to channel. When they get here on june 12, youve got a big river that you have to contend with. In june, youve got the snowmelt coming out of the mountains on the river is as big as it will be all year whenever the pioneers are showing up here. Were looking at a river that is almost 1000 feet across. What they had done as they built a ferry operation. Prior to that, you just forwarded the river and found the shallow spot and hoped the river was shallow enough to ford it and the ferry operations became a safer way to cross so once they cross their party, they realized there were a lot of immigrants on the trail and we can help others for a small fee.
