Forest Service seeks input on rising fees Written by Geoffrey Plant on June 9, 2021
During a five-hour-long work session Tuesday morning, Grant County commissioners heard several presentations covering broadband infrastructure, the Tyrone Mine expansion and forest fees, among other topics.
Commissioners also decided at the end of the marathon meeting that they would not meet later as the Gila Regional Medical Center Governing Board, which had been scheduled to gather for a closed-door special session. They will meet again for a regular meeting on Thursday, however, and will run through an agenda of 24 action items, ranging from consideration of a resolution describing the duties of an interim county manager who would temporarily replace outgoing manager Charlene Webb to accepting a small adjustment to polling precinct boundaries put forward by County Clerk Marisa Castrillo.

Silver City Museum to host local history discussion series
Headlight staff reports
SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Silver City Museum is unveiling Unpacking Silver, a special series of seven presentations and discussions taking place on Saturday mornings from June to August. Each talk will focus on a theme from Southwest New Mexican history, from its pre-colonial origins through the development of Silver City as a modern American town.
Community conversation is a primary goal Upacking Silver. Each presentation will be followed by an open discussion where audience members are invited to ask questions, bring viewpoints and suggest ways to expand the project.

Charmeine Wait, executive director of the Silver City MainStreet Project, looks out over a less-developed portion of Big Ditch Park just south of the Thomas J. Ryan Public Safety Building, near where she envisions a connecting trail to Gough Park and an arch to mark a now nearly invisible entrance to the San Vicente Trail that exists on Hudson Street.
Although it lacks an identified source of funding at the moment, President Joe Biden’s “America the Beautiful” initiative could be just what Grant County needs to take its outdoor recreation economy to the next level, while simultaneously helping address the communitywide effects of climate change.
