Meet Frederik Vesti, the Mercedes junior eyeing the F3 title – and then F1 glory with the Silver Arrows

As Mercedes’ only academy driver on the official Road to F1, Frederik Vesti is under no illusions as to the weight of expectation he’s now got to shoulder, but the 19-year-old Formula 3 racer has been waiting for this opportunity a long time, having initially opened discussions with the Brackley-based team more than three years ago. In that period, Mercedes have had just one junior driver on the Road to F1 – George Russell – while Vesti has had multiple offers from other Formula 1 academies, turning each down in the belief his dream deal would become a reality. Speaking ahead of the F3 season opener in Barcelona this weekend, the Danish racer says it’s been worth the wait.

Chadwick: I have worked with Russell and Latifi and gained a lot

23 December, 2020 W Series champion Jamie Chadwick spoke to selected media this week about defending her title in 2021 and the championship becoming a Formula 1 support series. Here is what she had to say. You spent 2020 competing in Formula Regional European Championship. What did you learn from that experience? “To be in a championship like Formula Regional was a great experience. As the results go and from a performance perspective it was pretty disappointing and tough to swallow in that sense, but there is so much that I was able to learn. Being up against some of the best drivers coming through the ranks in one of the best junior teams in the world, ultimately I should be able to use that experience and come back stronger for what we have planned for next year.”

The opening six-race season of the W Series in 2019 was won by Jamie Chadwick, while Visser picked up a win and three further podiums to take P2 in the standings, 10 points adrift of Chadwick who went on to join Williams as a development driver. And for 2021 the W Series returns with an eight-race calendar, though this time it will switch from the DTM to the Formula 1 support race schedule.
