Ford Motor Co. s battery-electric version of its best-selling F-150 pickup truck is coming and now it has a name.
The Blue Oval revealed Monday that the truck will be dubbed F-150 Lightning. The vehicle itself will be unveiled May 19 via a livestreamed event from Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn.
F-150 Lightning is part of Ford s initial portfolio of electric vehicles that includes the Mustang Mach-E, which launched at the end of last year, and the forthcoming electric version of the Transit van. The automaker recently has accelerated its transition to electrified vehicles, including with the announcement in February that it would increase its investment in EV development to $22 billion through 2025 and the news that Ford plans to build a $185 million global battery development center somewhere in southeast Michigan.

Yeah, one can argue it’s weird for the name that one was bestowed upon Ford’s high-performance pickup to now be put upon a truck with an electric motor instead of a bad-ass V8, but on the other hand, well lightning and electricity just go together. Not to mention that an electric truck can be a performance rig.
That latter part is actually more important arguments about the name are one thing, but the question is, will the truck be any good? Will it be performance-oriented or simply an F-150 with an electric powertrain?

Ford Motor Co. revealed the name of its long-anticipated electric F-150 on Monday and said it plans to unveil the vehicle this month.

The company said little about the capabilities or design of the vehicle, though it released a teaser image showing the Lightning insignia and said production will begin in spring 2022.
It s the perfect name for Ford s electric truck.
It s been a long time since Ford slapped the Lightning moniker on a performance-based F-150. The Blue Oval seemed disinterested in reviving the nameplate, but a recent rumor indicated that it could return for the upcoming electric F-150. Those rumors are now confirmed as Ford has officially announced that the F-150 Lightning is making a comeback for its first electric truck. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will officially debut on May 19, 2021, at Ford s World Headquarters in Dearborn. A live stream will happen simultaneously for the world to see. Every so often, a new vehicle comes along that disrupts the status quo and changes the game (Model T, Mustang, Prius, Model 3). Now comes the F 150 Lightning, said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley. America s favorite vehicle for nearly half a century is going digital, and fully electric F-150 Lightning can power your home during an outage; it s even quicker than the original F-150 Lightni
