We are actually standing in front of a series of president ial limousines, which tell the story of the development of president ial transportation over the last 117 years or so. Right behind me is the 1902 carriage used by theodore roosevelt. The automobile really becomes a force in the United States starting in the 1890s. But by the time of roosevelts administration, it is a common occurrence to see cars moving on public streets. Roosevelt, interestingly enough, for all the reputation he has as a real forwardlooking progressive, really never cared much for automobiles. He wanted to remain in horsedrawn vehicles. Viola, mother of five children, 20 miles from sill ma, alabama, on route 80. A red and white sedan overtook her car. Several shots were fired. The driverless car veered off the highway and came to a stop at a cattle fence. She was dead. Arrested and charged with murder were three alleged members of the ku klux klan, one was tried. And the jury was unable to reach a verdict. This is an earth and dam, the temporary grave of three civil rights worker, two white, one negro. Beaten and shot to death. Tell the story of how you became the official White House Photographer. I love how you got the job. Mr. Draper i will give you the long story. Because it is fascinating to me. I never planned on being the White House Photographer. It was an opportunity that presented itself. Back when i was a Staff Photographer at the ap and most of my career has been in the journalism newspaper wire service business, i was assigned to cover the campaign president ial campaign in 2000. I was assigned to cover governor bush, who was running for office. I was among many journalists traveling on the campaign trail for nearly 18 months. And it was not until the very end of the campaign that it was decided actually, realized that i had a shot at the white house job, which i was very happy and satisfied with my position at the ap.
