Fowler man shot and killed following law enforcement pursuit

MINNEOLA A Fowler man was shot and killed by law enforcement Tuesday night in Minneola following a pursuit.
According to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the incident began about 7 p.m. Tuesday when a family member of Jim Wright, 67, of Fowler, reported to the Meade County Sheriff’s Office that they were concerned about his welfare.
It ended about 9:40 p.m. with six officers firing rounds at Wright, who investigators say was armed and refused to drop his weapon.
After the initial call, sheriff’s deputies began searching for Wright and located him sitting in his dark green Kia Sorento near the Clark/Meade county line, according to the KBI release.

MINNEOLA, Kan. (AP) Law enforcement officers fatally shot a driver in southwest Kansas when he got out of his sport utility vehicle holding a gun after a chase, authorities say.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 67-year-old Jim Wright, of Fowler, was pronounced dead Tuesday night at the scene in Minneola.
Deputies tracked Wright down after his relatives called the Meade County Sheriff’s Office expressing concerns about his welfare, but he drove off when he saw them, the KBI said.
Law enforcement officers from several area agencies joined the pursuit before it ended in Minneola after Wright drove across tire-puncturing spike strips. The KBI said Wright then exited his vehicle holding a firearm, and law enforcement officers ordered him to drop it.
