Bangalore Traffic Police in the south zone are cracking down on parking violations by identifying 75 roads for special enforcement drives against footpath parking and no parking violations. The initiative aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion caused by parking issues on roads and bring back towing on a pilot basis.
Bengaluru this year has recorded the second highest number of deaths in road accidents in the country after Delhi. According to the latest data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the city accounted for 3,822 road accidents in a year which makes 5.8 percent of the total accidents recorded in India while Delhi accounted for 8.1 percent of cases. Data shows that the city recorded the highest number of pedestrian deaths in the country with 247 deaths and 822 pedestrian injuries.
A resident said, “We are facing a lot of parking issues. The only way is to stop this and take tough action. We want the authorities to act. Like in other parts of the city, we want police to step up, put up awareness boards, and enforce strict measures like clamping, penalising, and also taking action against footpath parking.”
