so we ve been seeing it for days. default on u.s. government debt would be catastrophic. but what would the government s inability to pay what it owes mean in small towns and big cities? far from wall street and washington. brian todd has the sobering reality. reporter: among the first people who could be impacted by default, social security recipients. i can t even begin to imagine what they budgeted for, what they retired and knew that they would have coming in every month. reporter: what happens to the social security payments of more than 65 billion americans if it defaults on its debt? they will ultimately get a check but it will be late. and then what. they can t pay their rent, they can t put food on the table. reporter: default could also affect payments to food stamps
have as much political clout. it s that simple. and look, i don t want to hate on farmers. look, family farmers are but that s, for the most part, not who s it s mostly not family fae farmers, it s soybeans and corn. and huge number of people get farm subsidies for land they ve never seen. agro businesses have donated over $600 million to federal campaigns over the last decade. look, i know the s.n.a.p. program, the food stamps program is a big target, but people need to understand, it s the only part of the poor people s safety net left. welfare, as we know it, is gone. i worked for president clinton s administration and i supported welfare reform to move people to more living wage jobs, but less than 10% of even the food stamps recipients in america get cash welfare. housing assistance is gone. this is the last thing that low-income people used to survive on. this is such an important point. we stopped building affordable
grio perryjuni. perry, what is behind these cuts to the snap program? what s behind them is there was an increase in snap funding because of the stimulus of 2009. and that extension that increase has ended now. neither party really fought to keep this up. it s not as though the republicans didn t push to keep this money up. white house and democrats didn t either. you basically had a situation in washington where neither party this wasn t a divide in the issue but both parties sort of tacitly agreed they were going to let this increase go even though it affects millions of americans as we talked about. yeah. a few more numbers to go over with you elise. 8% of food stamps recipients are in homes with seniors, kids or the disabled. economists have found, listen to this, for every dollar in snap spending $1.70 is generated for the local community. husband republicans want to cut that additional money from the
