Chef Katherine Stern’s long-awaited restaurant The Midway opens Thursday at 1209 Soquel Ave. (the former site of Oyunaa’s Mongolian Cuisine). Hours for the initial soft opening stage are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday-Monday; the restaurant will be closed on Dec. 31. The plan is to add dinner service in mid-to-late January.
Registration is open until Oct. 20 for teams to enter the annual Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Chili Cook-Off, which takes place Oct. 28. Cash prizes will be awarded for Best Chili (amateur and professional), People’s Choice, Most Tasted, and Best Theme. Two chili types are eligible: ones with meat, and vegetarian.
Marianne’s Ice Cream has created a new ice cream flavor to honor Santa Cruz’s famous otter. The ice cream, Otter 841, is cinnamon caramel featuring chunks of snickerdoodle dough from local Pacific Cookie Co. A portion of proceeds will be donated to ocean conservation efforts
