Railserve, FTS Partner on Derail Light Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor
Railserve and Focused Technology Solutions (FTS) have developed the solar-powered Derail Light, 150 of which Railserve will install this quarter to improve derail device visibility in rail yards.
Compatible with both sliding and hinge derails, the light identifies derail location and offers a patent-pending, cloud-based interface that allows for “automatic reporting to any smart device to detect the position of the derail and to help prevent accidents,” reported FTS and Railserve, Marmon/Berkshire Hathaway companies.
Railserve Regional Leader of Operations Jason Smith played a key role in the technology’s development, following a derailment investigation, according to the partner companies. “I thought, ‘I wish we could see the derails better at night and through the snow,’” said

Focused Technology Solutions a Marmon/Berkshire Hathaway Company has announced the hiring of rail and transit industry leader Robert Fletcher as the company’s Sales Executive.
A life-long AREMA member, Fletcher has spent over 40 years making a mark on the rail and transit industry. Fletcher began his career building and servicing equipment at his family’s rail equipment business.
His wide range of industry expertise has allowed him to manage major railroad accounts in large national companies and own and operate an equipment company that has both developed and sold revolutionary safety and maintenance equipment.
Unlike most industries who have had major technological breakthroughs over the last one hundred years, the railroad industry has been stagnant in a lot of ways. Especially when it comes to track maintenance and repair; rail crews have been using the same technology –namely hydraulics and hand tools–to do the job.
Although these methods have been industry-standard to this point, they come with severe negative factors working against them.
From a pure production standpoint, both hydraulic and hand tools are extremely inefficient.
Hydraulic tools require multiple people to operate; one person with the tool, one person with the hoses, and so on. This naturally slows down the production potential for any rail crew. All those bulky hoses and generators greatly restrict the range of a railroader, making jobs on bridges and in tunnels nearly impossible. Perhaps the worst part of working with these tools, from an efficiency standpoint, is all of the set up time it takes before you
