Polk County Commission holds surprise vote to move Confederate marker in Bartow

BARTOW, Fla. â Located in plain view, on the grounds of the old Polk County courthouse in Bartow is a Confederate memorial.
Maggie Macaulay was at the unveiling ceremony nearly 40 years ago with her grandmother.
âShe was asked to unveil it and she did. I was there when she pulled the cord to lift the cloth off of the monument,â said Macaulay.
Though her great-grandfather is one of the soldiers recognized on the Confederate marker, the now New Mexico resident and others called for the Polk County Historical Commission to have the memorial moved.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has ended its investigation into possible Sunshine Law violations by Manatee County commissioners in relation to the termination of former County Administrator Cheri Coryea.
According to the department’s investigative report, FDLE agents investigated the case between Jan. 7 and March 12. During this time agents interviewed every Manatee County commissioner.
Commissioners Vanessa Baugh, James Satcher, Kevin Van Ostenbridge and George Kruse came under investigation after attempts to terminate Coryea raised public scrutiny along with concerns about possible Sunshine Law violations and influence from special interests.
The FDLE also served subpoenas to the four commissioners on Feb. 18. However, on Feb. 19 FDLE agents, along with the 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office, decided to rescind the subpoena “after learning that the cellular telephones used by the county commissioners were personally owned devices and not Mana

The Town of Century has rescheduled a grant application public hearing after a simple oversight led to public notices that listed two different locations for the meeting.
The public hearing will allow the town to apply for coronavirus funding through a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $200,000 to $5 million for neighborhood revitalization, commercial revitalization, economic development, public service, planning or housing.
A public notice distributed in the council’s agenda pack and a public notice posted on the front door of Century Town Hall both listed the location of Monday’s night’s public meeting as Century Town Hall on North Century Boulevard.
