Rare Fin Whale Washes Up at Fort Funston the Fifth Dead Whale Recorded Around Bay Area in Less Than a Month
There are just an estimated 3,200 fin whales in the waters off of California, Oregon, and Washington. Friday, one of them was found lifeless along the beach at Fort Funston having likely died from a boat strike.
Between a Super Cyclone (that was hinted as the Bay Area s best chance to get out of drought conditions) and an increasing number of dead whales washing ashore around San Francisco, it s a worrying sign of the hellacious times we’re in. The past 26 days have seen the corpses of at least four gray whales appear along Bay Area beaches in an almost unheard-of frequency.

Four gray whales have washed up dead near San Francisco within nine days, and at least one cause of death has been attributed to a ship strike.
More whales than usual have been washing up dead since 2019, and the West Coast gray whale population continues to suffer from an unusual mortality event, defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as “a stranding that is unexpected; involves a significant die-off of any marine mammal population; and demands immediate response.”
“It’s alarming to respond to four dead gray whales in just over a week because it really puts into perspective the current challenges faced by this species,” Dr. Pádraig Duignan, director of pathology at the Marine Mammal Center, said in a press release.
4 gray whales found dead in Bay Area this week, 1 caused by a ship strike By Tara Duggan
Four dead gray whales have washed ashore in the Bay Area in the past week, prompting concern among scientists about the length and intensity of a die-off of the giant mammals that is now in its third year.
The first whale carcass landed at San Francisco’s Crissy Field on March 31. Another was found in the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve at Moss Beach on Saturday. A third found floating in the bay was towed Wednesday to Angel Island, where staff from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito were to perform a necropsy Thursday morning when they got a call that a fourth had washed up on Muir Beach.
