Construction is booming in Highlands East

The following are briefs from the April 13 Highlands East meeting.
Laurie Devolin, chief building official for the township, said the numbers are showing a lot of building activity when compared to last year.
“As I said last month, we just are on a roll with people who are moving to the area,” she said.
Building permits doubled with 30 permits compared to the 15 permits of last year, including growth with related septic inspections. The construction values for this time of the year has more than doubled at $2,905,444 compared to last year’s $1,341,590.

The Prince Township Volunteer Fire Dept., will receive a much-needed funding boost from the province, just in time for training courses scheduled to start this summer.
Last month, the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) announced a one-time Fire Safety Grant of $5 million for municipal fire departments to assist with training and fire code enforcement, which have been hampered by the need for COVID-19 restrictions.

Vacant Unit Rebate Program
At the April 6 committee-of-the-whole meeting, Hanover council received an Elimination of Vacant Unit Rebate Program report, and requested a bylaw be presented at the next council meeting to eliminate the program in Hanover.

Since 2001, the provincial vacancy unit rebate (VUR) program has provided eligible commercial and industrial properties the ability to apply for a 30 per cent and 35 per cent rebate of the property taxes, respectively.
This program was originally implemented as a short-term aid to property owners in difficult economic times, however, many owners have seen this rebate used over many years.
