RDEK Board Highlights The following is a summary of some of the items covered during the April 9 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors’ meeting. Steamboat Jubilee Mountain Official Community Plan Adopted The Board adopted Bylaw No. 3022, a new Official Community Plan (OCP) for the unincorporated communities in Electoral Area G. The new plan builds upon the first OCP for Area G that was adopted in 2006 and includes a number of updated land use polices, including new development permit requirements to mitigate the impacts of development on environmentally sensitive areas, and to help protect new construction from wildfire. Landowners proposing to undertake new construction or other land altering activities should consult the OCP and with RDEK staff to determine if their project is impacted by the new development permit requirements.

Once on scene, authorities said they determined that there had been a head-on collision involving a 2011 Jeep SUV and a 2011 Toyota Prius. Police also confirmed three people were killed in the crash. 46-year-old Hugo Guadiana, 64-year-old Frank Medina, and his 9-year-old grandson were pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision, according to police.

Around 9 a.m. Sunday, a traffic collision happened near Nelson and Fogg Avenues in Oroville. As officers were driving to the scene, Oroville PD dispatch told them witnesses reported seeing a man leaving the area of the collision on foot. OPD Officers and medical personnel located 57-year-old Justin Neva, of Berry Creek, lying on the sidewalk, unresponsive, where the collision happened. OPD and medical personnel said they performed life-saving measures on Neva – however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
