Monmouth firefighters battle early morning blaze

Firefighters in the Maple City were awakened by a structure fire call early Friday morning. According to Fire Chief Casey Rexroat, at around 1:51, firefighters responded to 708 South D Street. Engine 23 of Ladder 40 arrived on the scene and found an unattached garage with fire showing from the north end of the structure that was extending into the interior of the second-floor attic area. A second alarm was requested for additional firefighters and an ambulance to the scene. Firefighters then made an aggressive attack on the fire from the exterior before making entry into the second floor of the structure to extinguish the rest of the fire. The majority of the fire was knocked down quickly and the fire department personnel remained on scene for several hours to take care of any remaining hot spots. No injuries were reported and all fire companies cleared the scene by 4:42. Temperatures in Monmouth hovered around zero around that time on Friday.
